U.S.-Pakistan Counterterrorism Talks will Help Formulate Joint Action Plan: Naqvi

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday said counterterrorism dialogue between Pakistan and the United States will help them formulate a joint action plan aimed at eliminating terrorism.

A statement issued by the Interior Ministry said Naqvi had conveyed these sentiments during a meeting with U.S. Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory LoGerfo. Both officials discussed bilateral relations and agreed to increase cooperation in various fields, including counterterrorism, border security and counter-narcotics,

The minister hoped for “positive results of Pak-U.S. cooperation in eliminating terrorism,” noting the “extraordinary improvement” in Pak-U.S. ties following the election of President Donald Trump.

Praising Trump’s efforts for global peace, Naqvi said: “The elements of transparency, mutual trust and cooperation are prominent in Pak-U.S. relations.” He said the situation was a great opportunity to promote mutual relations in every field.

The interior minister also welcomed a recent U.S. decision to designate the banned Balochistan Liberation Army and its Majeed Brigade as global terrorist organizations, terming the development a “good step.”

During the meeting, per the statement, LoGerfo expressed condolences over the loss of lives in terrorist attacks. “Pakistan is a very important country in geostrategic terms,” he was quoted as saying.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Acting U.S. Ambassador Natalie Baker and the federal interior secretary were also present on the occasion.

Earlier this week, U.N. Special Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir and LoGerfo co-chaired the U.S.-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue, with Washington saying it was committed to combat terrorism in all its forms in collaboration with Pakistan.
