Trump Once Again Praises Field Marshal Asim Munir

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday reiterated his praise for Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir, who he met for a lunch at the White House earlier this month.

Addressing a press conference after attending the annual NATO summit at The Hauge, Trump described the recent Pakistan-India conflict the “most important” of all recent ones. He said both countries have nuclear weapons and he ended the war with a series of phone calls promising trade.

“I said look if you are going to go fighting each other… it was getting very bad… I said if you are going to go fighting each other then we are not going to do trade deals,” he told journalists. While Pakistan has praised Trump’s diplomatic role in brokering a ceasefire with India, Delhi maintains the U.S. played no role and the détente was achieved through bilateral communication.

During his press talk, Trump recalled that he had met Munir at his office last week. “A very impressive personality, a great man,” he said of the Army chief. He also termed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a close friend, describing him as a “great gentleman.”

Previously, Trump had described Munir as “an exceptional human being and an inspiring personality.”

He said both countries had agreed to the ceasefire because they wanted trade deals with the U.S.

The Government of Pakistan last week recommended Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “decisive diplomatic intervention” during the recent crisis between Pakistan and India.
