The Takeaway (May 5, 2026)

Drums of War

A month-long ceasefire between Iran and the United States appears on the verge of collapse with President Trump launching ‘Project Freedom’ to “assist” commercial vessels stranded due to blockades of the Strait of Hormuz. Both sides have accused each other of opening fire on ships attempting to pass through the Strait, though Tehran insists there is no “military solution” to conflict.

Under Fire

The U.A.E. has warned it reserves the right to respond after Iran once again launched projectiles toward it, striking the Fujairah petroleum industrial site and injuring at least three people. The attack, condemned by most global powers, is seen as a major escalation. Tehran has blamed Washington for the strikes, claiming it was targeting ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz in violation of its blockade.

Heat Emergency

The National Disaster Management Authority has issued emergency protocols and placed hospitals on alert amidst rising temperatures across Pakistan, with forecasts of “above-normal” heat through June. The organization has urged provincial and district authorities to launch public awareness programs highlighting the dangers of the heatwave and promoting preventative measures.

Limited Mandate

The Islamabad High Court has ruled that the Council of Islamic Ideology has no authority to issue opinions on the criminal culpability of individuals in light of a 2025 opinion declaring a person guilty of blasphemy. The judgment observes the CII overstepped its mandate in issuing the opinion, citing Article 229, 230 of the Constitution only allow the CII advisory jurisdiction.

Under Threat

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, in its annual report, has warned of a severe reduction in civic space, erosion of judicial independence and growing insecurity across Pakistan, warning this carries far-reaching consequences for the rule of law and protection of fundamental freedoms. The report has also noted a growing trend of police encounters and ongoing enforced disappearances.

Timely Justice

The Federal Constitutional Court has ruled that prolonged reserved judgments in superior courts are in violation of law, observing high courts are bound to issue such verdicts within 90 days. The judgment further states that even unintentional leaks by bench members before judgement delivery violate court regulations and could result in rulings being declared void.

Naval Assistance

The Pakistan Navy has provided emergency assistance to six Indian and one Indonesian crew member aboard a vessel sailing from Oman to India that developed a technical fault in the Arabian Sea. The Navy, per reports, had responded to an emergency request. It has provided the affected crewmembers with food, medical assistance and technical support.

Last Chance

Incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khanum, has once again issued a call for the PTI leadership to gather in large numbers outside Adiala Jail in a bid to pressure the government into transferring her brother to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment. In a message on X, she has stressed that only lawmakers, and not supporters, should reach the jail.

Curtailing Demand

Latest data suggests petroleum sales in Pakistan declined by 7% year-on-year in April, with market observers attributing the development to higher fuel prices resulting from the Middle East conflict. The average price of motor spirit has risen 54% year-on-year, while that of high-speed diesel had increased 67% despite reductions to the levy imposed by the government for revenue generation.

Deficit Persists

A surge in imports during April has offset a boost to export earnings, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The report states exports grew 14% year-on-year last month to $2.48 billion against a 7.46% increase to imports, taking them to $6.55 billion. Consequently, the trade deficit has widened by 3.82% to $4.07 billion in April year-on-year.
