Back-and-Forth Talks
Pakistan continues to play the role of messenger in negotiations between Iran and the United States, as both states appear to inch closer to a deal aimed at securing a permanent end to the conflict. Iran, per state media, is currently considering a U.S. response after President Trump indicated he was not pleased with the terms presented to him last week.
Selective Justice
The government has decided, in principle, to compensate those affected by the dispute over One Constitution Avenue, despite failing to offer the same consideration to thousands evicted in Bari Imam over similar legal concerns. The major difference between the two: the residents of One Constitution Avenue comprise the country’s elite, including judges, journalists and politicians.
Waiting for LNG
Officials of the Energy Ministry have claimed the Government of Pakistan is coordinating with Iran to secure safe transit for two Qatar LNG cargoes through the Strait of Hormuz, as the country grapples with fuel supply disruptions. The Power Division maintains it has avoided large-scale loadshedding through fuel diversification but has warned of higher tariffs if the LNG supply remains suspended.
Tit-for-Tat
Opposition alliance TTAP chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai has urged the government to restore incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan’s visitation rights if it wishes to de-escalate prevailing political tensions. In a statement, he admitted sharp rhetoric from the PTI had hindered dialogue efforts, but stressed that this could be reversed with some concessions from the state.
Open Call
Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has invited workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to join his party’s movement for a “change of the system,” vowing the JI would soon build a nationwide base of supporters to protest against injustice. In his address, he specifically criticized the Punjab and KP governments, alleging they were not interested in addressing public concerns.
New Budget
The government is likely to convene the National Assembly’s budget session on June 1, with expectations of the federal budget being presented the same week. Talks to finalize the financial plan are already underway, with authorities maintaining this budget would help steer the country from economic stabilization to sustainable growth.
Boosting Production
Saudi Arabia, Russia and five other OPEC+ states have boosted their oil production quota by 188,000/barrels per day for June, with analysts stating the move seeks to let the world know the U.A.E.’s exit from the bloc has not impacted its operations. A key barrier, however, remains the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting a key shipping lane through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes.
Compensatory Land
The government of Pakistan-administered Kashmir has announced it is granting land ownership to over 1,000 families displaced from the Line of Control due to shelling from India. Most of these families have been living on unoccupied state land since 2006 after being displaced during various shelling incidents post-1998.
Gathering Funds
The Finance Ministry has directed all ministries, divisions, departments and autonomous bodies to surrender within 10 days all savings and unspent allocations not expected to be utilized within this fiscal year to facilitate finalization of the upcoming fiscal year’s budgetary allocations. Earlier, the Public Accounts Committee had directed the ministry to hold accountable anyone seeking additional funds.
Investment Barriers
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has reiterated a vow to reduce operational and bureaucratic hurdles facing companies investing under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor in light of a Chinese company’s abrupt announcing of shuttering operations in Gwadar due to prolonged delays in securing permissions for exports. In its letter, the company specifically pointed to “non-market” factors for its extreme step.
