Gaza Ceasefire
After nearly 16 months, a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has come into effect. Under the 42-day initial phase of the deal, 33 Israeli hostages will be released in exchange for 990 Palestinians. Additionally, Israel will allow the entry of 600 trucks of humanitarian aid daily. Global rights organizations have called for both sides to respect the ceasefire and work toward durable peace.
Kurram Operation
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has announced “indiscriminate and stringent” action against militants involved in attacks on aid convoys traveling to the restive Kurram district. In a statement, the provincial government has said it will ensure the implementation of a ceasefire between rival tribes as per law. Residents of areas facing the operation will be relocated to temporary camps.
Panda Bonds
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has announced the government plans to launch a $200 million Panda bond by June. The move aims to enhance the country’s presence in China’s capital markets. According to the minister, the bond is part of a broader strategy to transition Pakistan’s economy toward export-driven growth, with a focus on achieving sustainability in balance of payments.
Stern Action
The Federal Investigation Agency has lodged cases against eight alleged human traffickers in Gujrat, Sialkot and Gujranwala districts. The suspects allegedly made travel arrangements for victims who perished while attempting to illegally reach Europe last week. Of the 44 Pakistanis onboard, only 21 survived and have been offloaded in Morocco.
Challenging Verdict
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced it will challenge the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case in high court, with Secretary General Salman Akram Raja claiming the repatriation of funds was “misinterpreted” by the incumbent government. The party has said the conviction and appeals process will not impact its ongoing talks with the government.
Largest Airport
The New Gwadar International Airport, a key project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has been formally inaugurated. Spread across 430 acres, the airport is Pakistan’s largest in terms of area. It is located 26km from Gwadar city and features a single runway measuring 3,658m in length and 75m in width. It was constructed at a cost of approximately Rs. 50 billion.
The TTP Problem
In private talks, the Afghan Taliban have acknowledged to Pakistan that the presence of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan on its soil is a “problem.” The interim Afghanistan government has reiterated that Islamabad should resolve the problem through dialogue. Pakistan has rejected the proposal, stressing that the TTP will not be treated as a legitimate entity and must be eradicated.
Traffic Management
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities concerned to demarcate separate lanes for motorcycles and bicycles on major arteries of Lahore to reduce vehicular accidents and improve traffic flow. In the first phase, a 10km ‘biker lane’ is being prepared on Ferozepur Road. Eventually, the government hopes to build similar lanes on all roads of the provincial capital.
Amending Tax Laws
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance will take up the Tax Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 tomorrow (Tuesday). The legislation seeks to ban non-filers from purchasing vehicles over 800cc, acquiring property beyond a specified limit, and making stock purchases beyond a certain threshold. The government also plans to gradually abolish higher rates of withholding taxes for non-filers.
TikTok ‘Banned’ in U.S.
After an hours-long outage triggered by a ban on its operations in the U.S., TikTok restored its services on assurances of President-elect Trump he will reverse the ban upon assuming power. In a statement announcing the restoration, TikTok thanked Trump, maintaining his decision will help over 7 million small businesses thrive and ensure access to the service for more than 170 million Americans.
