Inching Toward Talks
The PMLN-led government and the PTI have agreed to hold ‘unconditional talks’—though it remains unclear when the dialogue will formally commence. Confirming that ‘initial’ discussions have occurred, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has noted a ‘trust deficit’ between the two sides. He said the opposition party should convey its sincerity by expressing remorse for the May 9, 2023 riots.
PTI Uses KP Resources
The Interior Ministry has informed the Islamabad High Court the PTI utilized resources of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government to remove road barriers and enter the federal capital during its protest last month. The ministry has stressed the PTI ignored court orders and refused to seek permission for its demonstration, adding it also refused an offer of an alternate venue for its gathering.
Ray of Hope
A Consumer Confidence Index Survey, conducted by Ipsos, has found one in three Pakistanis believe the country’s economic condition is strong or moderate; almost double over views recorded in the previous quarter. It has also found that one in five Pakistanis expect further improvements within the next six months, with men and middle- and lower-income groups expressing more optimism than the rich.
Failed Policy
Almost seven months after forming the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency, the government has dissolved it, returning powers to probe and prosecute cybercrimes back to the Federal Investigation Agency. Despite notifying its formation, the government never made requisite key appointments or fulfilled the budgetary requirements of the new agency, forcing an end to its operations.
IMF Loan Interest
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has confirmed to a Senate panel that Pakistan is paying nearly 5% interest on the $7 billion loan it secured from the International Monetary Fund earlier this year. In his briefing, the minister claimed the country has met its external financing gap for the current fiscal year and will not need to seek out any more loans in the near-term.
National Finance Commission Award
The federal finance secretary has called for revisiting the NFC Award, claiming the 7th NFC ‘distorted’ the federal fiscal architecture. Maintaining there is no IMF condition to revisit the NFC Award, he has said discussions are ongoing between the federal, provincial governments to devolve the education and health sectors, as well as the Benazir Income Support Program.
Poverty Eradication Efforts
The Asian Development Bank has approved $330 million in additional financing to support Pakistan’s social protection initiatives, aimed at reducing poverty through targeted disbursals. In a statement, a senior ADB official said the program will strengthen government efforts to reduce intergenerational poverty, especially for women disproportionately affected by economic hardships.
PSX Rally Continues
Continuing to break records, the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s benchmark KSE-100 Index has crossed 113,000 points. Improving macroeconomic indicators, recovery in geopolitical equities, and a recent surge in global oil prices have fueled the bullish sentiment. Analysts have noted the KSE-100 Index has climbed from 40,000 points to 112,000 in just 18 months.
Countering Smog
The Lahore High Court has directed relevant authorities in Punjab to relocate trees instead of cutting them down when undertaking new construction. The court has also suggested the formulation of a new, permanent policy to limit operational hours of markets and wedding ceremonies to reduce emissions in the evenings, when pollutants are most likely to remain suspended in the atmosphere.
IMF’s Impact on Inflation
In a testimony submitted to the National Assembly, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has admitted that hiking utility tariffs and currency depreciation, as demanded by the IMF, played a significant role in the rampant inflation of the past two years. He has claimed the Competition Commission is seeking to reduce inflationary pressures by tackling cartelization and undue profiteering.
