Another Attempt

Pakistan, along with other regional and global powers, is actively pursuing another round of Iran-United States dialogue to prevent the ceasefire from dissolving and outright hostilities breaking out once more. The immediate priority, per reports, is to extend the ceasefire to allow backchannel exchanges to evolve into another round of talks aimed at a permanent end to the conflict.

Blockade in Place

The U.S military began a blockade of ships leaving Iran’s ports on Monday, with Tehran threatening to retaliate against ports of its Gulf neighbors if it persists. U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed Iran is in touch with the U.S. and is willing to work toward a deal, but has warned it would need to abandon all nuclear aims for it to proceed.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited has warned that a planned maintenance activity on one of its faulty submarine cables may lead to internet service degradation for users. In a statement, the company has said the repair work will proceed April 14-20 and regretted the inconvenience it may cause for consumers during this week.

Funding Gap

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has said Pakistan is exploring multiple options, including Eurobonds, bilateral loans, and commercial debt to replace the $3.5 billion deposit withdrawn by the United Arab Emirates earlier this month. According to the minister, Pakistan has sufficient reserves for 2.8 months of import cover and maintaining this is essential for overall macro-stability.

Minimum Marriage Age

A Punjab Assembly committee has set 18 years as the minimum legal age of marriage for both boys and girls across the province, abolishing an earlier provision that had permitted girls to marry at 16. The legislation also declares child marriage a cognizable, non-bailable, and non-compoundable offense, enabling immediate police action and preventing any private settlement of such cases.

Pakistan’s salary class, per data compiled by the Federal Board of Revenue, has paid Rs. 420 billion in income tax in the first nine months of the ongoing fiscal year, dwarfing other sectors. The data shows the real estate sector paid Rs. 197 billion in taxes in the same period, highlighting the urgent need to expand the tax net to reduce the burden of taxation on salaries employees.
