Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday stressed that the success of ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran in Switzerland depends on strict adherence to agreed commitments and their accurate implementation.
In a post on X ahead of an official visit to Islamabad, he wrote “the effectiveness of the talks depends on full commitment to the agreed obligations and their precise implementation.” He further said “progress on this path will be measured by practical adherence to accepted responsibilities.”
He also cautioned against “statements outside the agreed text,” noting this does not help advance the negotiations.
Pezeshkian’s statement comes ahead of an official visit to Islamabad, as confirmed by Iran’s state news agency IRNA, which cited the president’s office. In a statement, the president’s office said one aim of the visit was expressing appreciation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for “his mediation between Iran and the United States.”
Separately, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said a high-level delegation that includes ministers and other high-ranking officials would accompany Pezeshkian. It said the Iranian president would meet President Asif Ali Zardari and hold talks with P.M. Sharif. The Senate chairman, the National Assembly speaker, and the deputy prime minister would also call on the Iranian president, it added.
“During the visit, the two sides will review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explore new avenues to further deepen cooperation across diverse sectors, including trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges, and regional connectivity,” read the statement.
It said the visit would provide an important opportunity to discuss ongoing diplomatic engagements following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest. “The forthcoming visit reflects the shared commitment of Pakistan and Iran to further deepen their historic and cultural ties and underscores their common aspiration for peace, stability, and sustainable progress in the region,” it stressed.
Talks between the United States and Iran are ongoing in Switzerland, with a joint statement from mediators Pakistan and Qatar noting the two sides had agreed to a roadmap for a final deal within 60 days. They also agreed on a mechanism to end fighting in Lebanon between U.S. ally Israel and Iran-aligned Hezbollah, and opened a communications line to help ensure safe passage for commercial ships through the strait, a vital global oil supply route.
“The discussions were held in a positive and constructive atmosphere and yielded encouraging progress,” P.M. Sharif wrote on X on Monday, adding the first round of talks had “concluded successfully.” He also commended the leaderships of both the United States and Iran for their continued commitment to constructive engagement, and thanked friendly and brotherly countries for their support in advancing the “historic” diplomatic process.
