Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Monday reiterated concerns about incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health in light of an official medical report submitted in court that states he has elevated blood pressure due to anxiety and mental stress.
Addressing a press conference alongside other leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), he said a future course of action would be determined after consultations between Khan’s personal doctors, family, legal team and the party leadership.
Afridi maintained that Khan’s personal physicians, Dr. Asim and Dr. Faisal, had never found his blood pressure elevated, adding this was a matter of serious concern. He noted that neither Khan’s family, nor his lawyers or personal physicians had been permitted to meet him since Dec. 2, 2025.
“In these circumstances, the emergence of an official medical report raises serious questions about his actual health condition,” he said, adding the lack of direct access had heightened public concerns.
The chief minister said Khan was a sportsman who had maintained a physically active lifestyle and had not previously faced any similar health concerns. He maintained Khan was in excellent physical condition when he was arrested and his health concerns had emerged only after incarceration.
“For 250 million people, the judiciary remains the last avenue of hope. If a former prime minister, the leader of the country’s largest political party and its most popular political leader cannot receive justice, what confidence can an ordinary citizen place in the justice system?” he questioned, as he urged the courts to ensure Khan’s meetings with family took place on Tuesday. “If the judiciary does not deliver justice, the people will take justice into their own hands,” he warned.
During his press conference, he reiterated his demand for the restoration of meetings between Khan and his lawyers and family members, access for his personal physicians, and treatment at the best available hospital under the supervision of his personal doctors and in the presence of his family.
PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan noted the case pertaining to Khan’s meetings was due for hearing before the Supreme Court. “We implore the chief justice and courts for justice. We have gone to the high court 25 times, and to the Supreme Court 15 times. This is Khan’s fundamental legal right, and he should be allowed to meet his family, his doctors and lawyers tomorrow,” he added.
On Monday, the Adiala Jail superintendent submitted a medical report to the Supreme Court revealing Khan had elevated blood pressure due to severe anxiety and mental stress. The physician has recommended more family visits to reduce Khan’s anxiety.
Best possible treatment
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah, speaking in the Senate, refuted reports of Khan not receiving proper medical treatment, rejecting statements of Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.
Sanaullah said the PTI founder was receiving the best available medical treatment, maintaining there had been no negligence in addressing his health concerns while in judicial custody.
He acknowledged that responsibility for the health and treatment of a person in judicial custody rested with the authorities concerned as well as the court under whose orders the person was confined. He said the authorities would be responsible if any negligence was proven.
Sanaullah noted petitions concerning the PTI founder were pending before the Islamabad High Court and the Supreme Court and proceedings were taking place in accordance with law.
