The Sindh government on Friday announced a four-day break for Eidul Azha, spanning May 26-29, ensuring citizens get to avail all three days of the festival, against the federal government’s decision to require students and private sector employees to return to work on the third day of Eid.
In his notification, Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah said the Eidul Azha holidays would be observed from May 26 to May 29 in the province. “The government of Sindh hereby declares 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th May, 2026 as public holidays on the occasion of Eidul Azha throughout the province of Sindh, for all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils, except essential services and departments/offices engaged in preparation of budget for financial year 2026-27,” it said.
Earlier this week, the federal government had provoked outrage—for all except public sector employees—by announcing Eid holidays spanning May 26-28, meaning there would be no holiday on the third day of Eid. However, this does not apply to government employees, who are already operating on a four-day workweek and have Fridays off amidst fuel conservation measures.
Effectively, the center has penalized private sector employees while granting government employees almost the entire week off; from May 26-31, government offices would remain closed.
