An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Thursday approved the bail petition filed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s nephew Shershah in a case related to the attack on the Lahore Corps Commander’s house during the May 9, 2023 riots.
Police took Shershah into custody on Aug. 22, a day after his brother Shahrez was arrested. He was initially remanded in police custody for five days before being placed on a 14-day judicial remand.
During the hearing into the plea, Shershah’s lawyer argued that the challan in the case has yet to be presented and the suspect cannot be kept in custody indefinitely. “There is no evidence against the suspect. He is not involved in any riot,” he claimed.
After hearing arguments, the court approved Shershah’s bail plea. A day earlier, the same judge had approved the bail plea of Shahrez, who was also taken into custody in connection with the May 9 rioting case.
Video footage of the May 9 riots shows Shershah alongside Hassan Niazi during the attack on the Lahore Corps Commanders House. Niazi was tried and convicted by a military court for his involvement and is currently serving a 10-year sentence.
The May 9, 2023 riots pertain to the violence that erupted across Pakistan after the arrest of Khan in a corruption case. The violence included attacks on military and state installations.
