The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has announced a 50% reduction in gas supply for captive power plants during the winter, citing a severe deficit in gas reserves.
The curtailment, effective from Jan. 1-31, 2025 stems from a depletion of existing gas reserves, according to a notice issued by the company. It said gas supply for captive power generation would be half the approved sanctioned load during the specified period. The contract for gas supply to captive power plants explicitly states that gas would be provided on an “as and when available” basis during the period from March to November each year.
Earlier, the Ministry of Energy has issued a priority order mandating that gas demand for the domestic sector, especially in Balochistan, be fulfilled on priority during the winter season. According to SSGC, Pakistan’s gas reserves have declined from 1,200 mmcfd in 2017-18 to an estimated 690 mmcfd in 2024-25.
