The Punjab government on Friday announced an end to free public transport services across the province from June 13 (Saturday), with passengers required to pay fares once again.
According to a notification, passengers would be required to purchase tickets for travel on the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus and Green Electric Bus services.
The government had made free public transport as part of a broader relief package aimed at reducing financial burdens on citizens amid rising fuel prices triggered by the Iran war. The initiative was initially announced for one month but was subsequently extended, as global fuel prices remained volatile.
The provincial government said nearly 800,000 passengers had availed the free transport facility daily, with the Orange Line Train in Lahore accounting for around 290,000 commuters each day. Over 100,000 daily passengers also availed the Metro Bus service free of charge.
Despite a global reduction in fuel prices, Pakistanis continue to face elevated prices, primarily due to a levy that comprises nearly 40% of the fare. Analysts say the government is utilizing the levy to make up tax shortfalls by the Federal Board of Revenue, as the country is required to maintain collection targets under an International Monetary Fund program.
