PTI Seeks Contempt Charges over Alleged Breach of Order to Transfer Imran Khan to Hospital

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday filed a contempt petition over the alleged violation of the Supreme Court’s order regarding incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s transfer to a private hospital.

In its petition, the party has sought the initiation of contempt proceedings against those it holds responsible, along with show-cause notices and directions for their personal appearance before the court.

Filed by PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja and Uzair Bhandari on behalf of Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, the petition asked the court to declare the respondents guilty of contempt and punished in accordance with law. The respondents identified include Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, as well as the interior secretary—though not Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi—and Adiala Jail officials.

The petition also seeks the immediate transfer of the PTI founder to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for a medical examination and requests the court to appoint a judicial officer or constitute a local commission to oversee and ensure implementation of its order.

In its Aug. 18 order, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court had directed authorities to transfer Khan to Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination within two days. The government, however, took him to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in the presence of doctors of Shifa International Hospital.

The PTI has accused the federal government of violating the Supreme Court’s order in this regard. In turn, the government has likewise accused the PTI of contempt by “politicizing” Khan’s health in violation of an undertaking with the Supreme Court.
