The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) on Monday announced a planned maintenance activity on a faulty submarine cable, warning it may lead to internet service degradation for consumers.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the PTCL said an international cable consortium was conducting the repair work, adding it would begin on April 14 and continue until April 20.
“During this period, customers may face Internet service degradation during evening hours,” it said, while apologizing for the inconvenience.
Pakistan has a history of internet disruptions and slowdowns due to faults in submarine cables. In January, scheduled maintenance resulted in an outage that affected some users. Prior to that, in October 2025, nationwide internet slowdowns were reported due to maintenance.
Similarly, slowdowns were experienced nationwide in September 2025 due to faults in undersea cables.
The combined capacity of all six submarine cable systems serving the country, including three PTCL cable systems, two submarine cable systems of Trans World Associates and PEACE cable of Cyber Internet Services, stands at 13 Tbps, while national usage currently ranges between 7-8 Tbps.
