The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening children’s online safety.
According to a press release, the agreement would strengthen awareness, digital safety and responsible use of online platforms among children, parents, teachers and caregivers across Pakistan. It said the PTA and Google would collaborate on a child safety program focused on awareness, education and capacity-building, “equipping parents and teachers with practical tools and resources to help children navigate the digital world safely.”
Among the key initiatives outlined in the MoU are developing awareness content in English and local languages, conducting training programs in educational institutions and supporting a nationwide outreach campaign to connect millions of families with localized online safety resources and tutorials.
The statement said PTA Chairman Maj. Gen. Hafeezur Rehman (ret.) had highlighted the “importance of collective efforts and stakeholder collaboration to protect children in an increasingly digital environment.” Similarly, PTA official Khawar Siddique had stressed the “importance of promoting digital literacy and responsible use of online platforms to promote a safer digital environment for children and families.”
The press release said the collaboration reflected the PTA and Google’s shared commitment to empowering parents and teachers, enhancing digital awareness, and creating a safer and more secure online environment.
The signing of the MoU comes days after Google inaugurated a local office in Pakistan.
