The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) on Wednesday formally signed a no-confidence motion against Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, setting the stage for a change in government in the region.
Speaking with Geo News, PPP AJK Secretary-General Faisal Mumtaz Rathore said both parties backed the no-confidence motion, adding PMLN’s Raja Farooq Haider had signed the document on the PMLN’s behalf. “We currently have the open support of 37 members,” he said, adding five additional assembly members have also assured their backing. He said the PPP would announce the name for its candidate for the next prime minister within two days.
The PMLN had earlier announced that while it would support the no-confidence motion, it would not become a part of any subsequent government. Rather, it would sit on the opposition benches.
The no-confidence motion requires the backing of 27 lawmakers in the 52-member house. With the PMLN’s support, the PPP claims to have secured the support of 36 members. Initially, the PPP had 17 lawmakers, but it inducted 10 PTI lawmakers, raising its numbers.
