PMLN Taps Rana Sanaullah for Vacant Senate Seat from Punjab

The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has announced it will field Adviser to the P.M. on Inter-Provincial Coordination Rana Sanaullah for the Senate by-election against a vacant general seat from Punjab.

In a statement, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said party chief Nawaz Sharif had awarded the ticket for the Senate general seat ticket from the Punjab Assembly to Sanaullah. She noted the election for the seat would take place on Sept. 9.

The contested seat was vacated after the disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ejaz Chaudhry, who was convicted to 10 years’ imprisonment in a May 9 case by an Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore. Following his conviction, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified his disqualification and announced elections to fill the vacancy.

The PMLN retains a majority in the Punjab Assembly and it is likely Sanaullah will sail through to a victory with little opposition.
