PIMS Confirms Imran Khan Administered Fourth Eye Injection

The administration of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has confirmed that incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been administered a fourth dose of Anti-VEGF Intravitreal injection and discharged with further care instructions.

In a statement, PIMS said Khan—currently incarcerated at Adiala jail—was brought to the hospital for the fourth dose of an intravitreal injection as part of his scheduled eye treatment. It did not specify when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder was brought to hospital but sources suggest it happened early on Tuesday.

Prior to the procedure, per the statement, ophthalmologists examined Khan and found him clinically stable, while an Optical Coherence Tomography scan showed signs of clinical improvement. Following his informed consent and under standard monitoring, surgeons administered the injection under microscopic guidance in the operation theater while adopting all standard precautionary measures and protocols, according to the statement.

PIMS said the procedure was performed as a day-care surgery, and Khan remained vitally stable before, during and after the treatment. He was subsequently discharged with instructions for further care, follow-up advice and related medical documentation, the statement added.

Khan has been shifted to PIMS for treatment of his right eye thrice before. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a serious eye condition, as revealed in a report submitted to the Supreme Court by his lawyer and the court’s amicus curiae, Salman Safdar.

CRVO commonly affects older adults and is linked to underlying cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. According to Safdar, quoting Khan, the former premier has lost 85% of the vision in his right eye.

In a posting on X, PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan said he had been informed of the treatment on Tuesday morning. ”I would add that whatever the treatment our concern remains unanswered—Khan sab and Bushra [Bibi] be shifted to hospital for treatment under the supervision of personal doctors accompanied by family members. This is their fundamental right. We have been demanding its implementation since long,” he added.
