Pakistan’s vocal support for Iran during its escalating conflict with Israel marks a principled and strategically sound position in a rapidly destabilizing region.
In a series of statements, including at the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s condemnations of Israeli aggression underscore not only its commitment to international law, but also its understanding of the broader geopolitical consequences of a weakened or destabilized Iran.
At the heart of Islamabad’s support lies the strategic imperative to avoid a regime change in Tehran that could pivot the Islamic Republic toward the interests of adversarial actors. It could open space for foreign-aligned factions that may be sympathetic to Israeli security objectives or India’s regional ambitions, both of which run counter to Pakistan’s national interests. For Pakistan, defending Iran’s sovereignty is not just an act of solidarity—it is an act of self-preservation in a shifting regional order.
Moreover, Pakistan’s support helps resist the dangerous precedent established by Israel’s actions of unilateral, extraterritorial strikes that violate the sovereignty of independent states. Whether in Syria, Lebanon, or now directly against Iranian soil, Tel Aviv’s actions continue to erode the foundations of international law. Silence in the face of such repeated aggression not only emboldens Israel but invites similar behavior elsewhere, creating a world where might replaces right.
It would not be out of place for Pakistan to adopt neutrality, in line with Tehran’s response when Delhi violated Islamabad’s sovereignty in Kashmir just weeks ago. Positively, Islamabad is rising above the bitterness and acting like a responsible state actor, offering support not based on reciprocity, but on principles.
This behavior must continue as the conflict risks continuing for weeks or months to come. All diplomatic, political, and even logistical support must be accorded to “brotherly” Iran, but this does not mean Pakistan should entangle itself in a direct military confrontation. The path forward lies in statesmanship, not brinkmanship, in wisdom, but not aggression.
Pakistan is not merely backing a neighbor in its support for Iran, it is taking a stand against impunity, for stability, and for a more lawful international order.
