Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the implementation of the government’s Fuel Subsidy Scheme, deciding to release its fifth and sixth tranches during June.
The federal government introduced the Fuel Subsidy Scheme to ease the burden of rising fuel costs, triggered by the ongoing Iran-U.S. war, on vulnerable sectors of the economy. According to an official statement, the meeting assessed the relief being provided to public transport operators, motorcycle owners and farmers, who have been particularly impacted by higher fuel prices.
The statement said relevant officials had briefed Dar on the scheme’s implementation, including measures to ensure transparency, accountability and effective coordination with provincial governments. Participants were further informed that four rounds of subsidy payments have already been disbursed over the past two months on a biweekly basis.
Expressing satisfaction with the overall progress of the program, the deputy prime minister directed authorities to maintain close coordination between federal and provincial institutions and strengthen oversight mechanisms to ensure that assistance reaches intended beneficiaries efficiently.
Among the participants were Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, the federal secretary for petroleum, the chief secretaries of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, as well as officials from Gilgit-Baltistan, the Islamabad Capital Territory and other relevant federal and provincial departments.
