Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said modernizing the infrastructure of Pakistan Railways is instrumental in establishing the country as a regional trade and logistics hub.
Chairing a review meeting on the progress of the Pakistan Railways Transformation Plan, he directed the swift upgradation of the Railways to make it a more effective and revenue-generating mode of transport. He noted rail remained the most cost-effective and efficient mode of transport for both passengers and freight, adding a modern and efficient system would play a pivotal role in strengthening the national economy, promoting trade and enhancing regional connectivity.
The prime minister emphasized that all railway development projects should be completed within the stipulated timelines while maintaining the highest quality standards. He also instructed relevant authorities to submit proposals for the upgradation of the Rohri–Multan section of Main Line-1.
Relevant officials briefed the meeting’s participants on the progress of ML-1 and ML-3 upgradation projects, Thar Coal railway connectivity and other ongoing railway initiatives. They said the Detailed Engineering Design for the Karachi–Rohri section of ML-1 has been completed, while the ML-3 Rohri–Nok Kundi upgradation would be carried out under the Public Sector Development Program and through bridge financing.
