New Medical Board Examines Imran Khan at Adiala Jail

A newly-formed medical board has completed its examination of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan, as per orders of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

In a statement, the jail administration said the new board, comprising five specialist doctors, had completed its examination of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder. The jailed ex-prime minister is suffering from central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, as made public by a report submitted to the Supreme Court by his lawyer and the court’s amicus curiae, Salman Safdar.

The medical board, said the jail administration, would soon submit a comprehensive report to the Islamabad chief commissioner, in accordance with the IHC’s orders.

In its order, issued last week, the IHC had directed the Islamabad chief commissioner to constitute a medical board to assess Khan’s health condition and determine whether he required hospitalization, as demanded by his party and family members, or could continue being treated in jail.

The IHC order had noted that under Prison Rules, the government holds the authority to transfer a convicted prisoner for special treatment. It had also directed communication of Khan’s condition with his family.

Khan, per multiple statements, has been transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) twice for treatment of his right eye. According to doctors, the treatment is working and his vision has improved. He is due for a third injection as part of the treatment next week.
