At least 195 people have been killed and 362 injured in various rain-related incidents across Pakistan from the start of the monsoon season on July 1 through Aug. 17, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) revealed in its situation report on Sunday.
According to the report, 7 deaths were reported in the previous 24 hours—1 in Balochistan and 6 in Punjab—while 30 injuries—1 in Balochistan, 29 in Punjab—were also reported in the same period. It said the death toll had been reconciled with data provided by Balochistan’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Additionally, per the report, 44.5km of roads have been damaged during the current monsoon season, comprising 43km in Balochistan; 1.28km in Gilgit-Baltistan; and 0.23km in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Similarly, nationwide, 30 bridges have been damaged; 1,559 houses partially damaged; 734 houses destroyed; and 352 livestock perished.
As part of relief measures for the monsoon, read the report, 45 medical camps have treated 3,991 people, while 41 relief camps have housed 49 people.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rains over the next 24 hours. It predicted a fresh wet spell of moderate intensity to start from Aug. 20 over the upper catchments of the Kabul, Indus and Jhelum rivers, as well as Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Rawalpindi, Sargodha and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions. “Moderate intensity rainfall is expected over the upper catchments of rivers Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej along with Gujranwala and Lahore divisions,” it added.
