Monsoon-Related Deaths Climb to 116: NDMA

Ongoing Monsoon rains across Pakistan have resulted in the deaths of 116 people since June 26, according to the latest data issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

In its latest situation report, the NDMA has said the greatest cause of death is house collapse (43.5%) followed by flash floods (26.1%), drowning (11.3%), and lightning (9.6%). The Punjab province leads with the highest number of casualties at 44 deaths and 149 injuries, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with 37 deaths and 55 injuries. In late June, at least 13 tourists were swept to their deaths while sheltering from flash floods on a raised riverbank in Swat.

Sindh has seen 18 deaths and 40 injuries between June 26 and July 14, while Balochistan has seen 16 deaths and four injuries. Pakistan-administered Kashmir has recorded one death and five injuries.

The NDMA’s report states that 57 children are among the deceased. Additionally, 40 men and 19 women were killed in various incidents related to monsoon rains.

According to the disaster management authority, 472 houses have been damaged during this year’s monsoon spell, while 117 livestock have been lost. It says there are currently 26 relief camps in operation, 24 in Punjab and two in Sindh.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rains across much of the country through July 16, with brief spells continuing for the rest of the week.
