Monsoon Claims 79 Lives across Pakistan

Separate incidents related to the ongoing monsoon rains, including flash floods, have led to the deaths of at least 79 people, while 138 others have been injured, according to data issue by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The statistics, spanning June 26 through July 7, show the highest number of fatalities occurred in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, while the highest number of injuries have been recorded in Punjab. In total, 29 deaths and 25 injuries have been recorded in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa; 24 deaths and 72 injuries in Punjab; 15 deaths and 34 injuries in Sindh; and 11 deaths and three injuries in Balochistan. Additionally, Pakistan-administered Kashmir has reported four injuries.

According to the NDMA’s data, seven deaths occurred in the past 24 hours, comprising two deaths in Punjab, one death in KP, and four deaths in Balochistan. Additionally, the past 24 hours saw six injuries in Punjab; and two injuries in KP.

Of the deaths recorded thus far, 33 occurred due to house collapses, while 27 occurred due to flash floods. They comprise 25 men, 16 women, and 38 children.

The NDMA said 189 houses have been damaged nationwide since this year’s monsoon rains began, while 94 livestock have been swept away. The emergency response agency has conducted 20 rescue operations, rescuing 234 people.

Last week, the NDMA’s National Emergency Operation Center issued an advisory warning of heavy rains and potential floods in large parts of the country through July 10.
