The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Tuesday announced it is organizing a peace jirga on Nov. 12 at the KP Assembly to discuss the security situation of the province and devise strategies aimed at restoring peace.
In a statement, the KP government said the Jirga would include representatives of all political parties, former chief ministers, lawyers and civil society representatives. It said Chief Minister Sohail Afridi would consult with former governors and chief ministers ahead of the Jirga to incorporate their input.
Additionally, the provincial government has invited Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Pakistan (MWM) chairman Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri to participate. Both men are allied with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and were nominated as opposition leaders in the National Assembly and the Senate, respectively.
Earlier this month, the KP government had announced it would convene a Jirga under the chairmanship of C.M. Afridi to achieve sustainable peace and social cohesion through dialogue.
