KP Assembly Resolution Demands Court Martial of Army Officers Who Operate Beyond Mandate

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution demanding court martial proceedings against military officers who have “breached the Constitution and their oaths by interfering in the affairs of other national institutions in the last two years.”

Passed by a majority vote, with 12 votes in opposition, the resolution did not directly name any individual but called for action against Army officials allegedly involved in operating beyond their mandate. “Interference in [the affairs of] other institutions amounts to treason under the Constitution,” read the tabled by PTI MPA Sher Ali Afridi. Demanding a halt to such “unconstitutional, illegal and inhuman acts,” and strict punishment for the offending officers, it also paid tribute to the Army for its sacrifices for the country.

However, the resolution regretted that some officers were “damaging” democracy for personal gains and the process had yet to abate. It said national progress required a halt to any further interference in politics by military officers.

Additionally, the resolution condemned the arrests of PTI leaders and workers and called for the immediate release of PTI founder Imran Khan.

Prior to the passage of the resolution, PTI lawmakers lamented the crackdown against their party after the May 9 riots, alleging there had been many “unjustified” arrests.
