ISPR Announces Arrest of Three More Retired Officers

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday announced three additional retired officers were taken into military custody for actions “prejudicial to military discipline.”

In a statement, the military’s media wing said the arrests were in connection with the ongoing proceedings against former ISI chief Lt. Gen. (retd.) Faiz Hameed. “In connection with the [field general court martial] proceedings of Lt. Gen. (retd.) Faiz Hameed, three retired officers are also in military custody for their actions prejudicial to military discipline,” read the brief statement issued by the ISPR.

“Further investigations of certain retired officers and their accomplices for fomenting instability at the behest of and in collusion with vested political interests are continuing,” it added.

Reportedly, two of the detained officers in military custody were of brigadier rank, while one was a colonel. Local media has alleged that the three operated as messengers between a political party and Hameed after his retirement.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar has hinted at more arrests in the coming days, stressing that no one could be permitted to damage national security. “All of it [Hameed’s activities] was being done at the behest of PTI founder. All of them are those people who damaged the country conniving with the anarchic group,” he alleged, adding accountability was necessary.

In an unprecedented move, the ISPR earlier this week announced that Hameed had been placed in military custody over alleged misuse of authority and was facing a field general court martial under provisions of the Pakistan Army Act. It further alleged that multiple instances of violation of the Pakistan Army Act had also been established post-retirement.
