Iran’s Military Announces Re-Closure of Strait of Hormuz over U.S. Blockade

The spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters on Saturday announced transit through the Strait of Hormuz has reverted to its previous state of strict military control, according to Iranian state media Press TV.

In a statement shared by Press TV, the spokesperson blamed “repeated U.S. violations and piracy under the guise of blockade” for the reversion. State broadcaster IRIB separately quoted the spokesperson as saying that “Iran agreed to allow a limited number of ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz according to agreements” but remain unfulfilled.

“But U.S. did not fulfil their obligations. So, the Strait of Hormuz is now closed again and passage requires Iran approval,” he added.

A day earlier, Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, though had cautioned ships to use the route previously approved by Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump had hailed the reopening but maintained that the U.S. blockade would remain in place until a deal with Tehran was “100% completed.”

The reversion decision is seen as a setback to peace talks, especially amidst indications from both sides of nearing a resolution.
