Iranian President Appreciates Pakistan’s Efforts for Two-Week Ceasefire

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and appreciated the Pakistani leadership’s efforts to bring about a temporary ceasefire between Iran and the U.S., according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

In a statement, the PMO said Pezeshkian and Sharif talked via telephone, with the Iranian leader conveying his best wishes for the people of Pakistan. It said he also confirmed that Iran would be participating in the negotiations in Islamabad, scheduled for later this week.

The talk, read the statement, lasted over 45 minutes and was warm and cordial. It said the prime minister had conveyed his deep appreciation for the wisdom and sagacity of the Iranian leadership in agreeing to the ceasefire and for accepting his offer to host negotiations in Islamabad. He also conveyed his respects to His Eminence Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Both leaders, said the statement, agreed to remain in close contact.

Separately, in a post on X, Sharif said their conversation had been “substantive,” adding Pakistan and Iran would work jointly to restore regional peace. “Pakistan remains committed to working closely with all its friends and partners to advance peace and stability in the region and beyond,” he added.

After more than a month of conflict, Iran and the U.S. agreed to a two-week temporary ceasefire mediated by Pakistan, as well as other regional states. The two states would now convene in Islamabad for peace talks in accordance with their competing proposals of peace. Iran has conveyed a 10-point framework, while the U.S. have likewise forwarded a five-point proposal.
