Government Aims to Shift 30% of Vehicles to Electric by 2031

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday announced the provision of electric bikes on easy instalments for government employees up to BSP-16, as he chaired a meeting on promoting electric vehicles in the country.

The meeting’s participants were informed the government is aiming to shift 30% of vehicles to electric power within the next five years, potentially saving $4.5 billion in fuel imports. The prime minister stressed on accelerating ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting the adoption of electric vehicles nationwide.

He emphasized that, given the evolving regional situation and future energy demands, the transition to electric vehicles would not only reduce the import bill but also contribute significantly to environmental protection and energy security.

He also stressed on the need to boost transparency in subsidies for electric motorbikes under the National EV Policy, directing relevant officials to expedite the scheme’s implementation.

Officials briefed the prime minister that 72 manufacturing certificates for electric motorcycles and rickshaws had been issued already, as well as four certificates for electric cars. They also confirmed the receipt of 123 applications for the installation of charging stations nationwide.
