Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday appointed General Aamer Raza as the Commander of the National Strategic Command, promoting him from the rank of Lieutenant General to “Four Star General.”
Gen. Raza was previously serving as the Chief of the General Staff of Pakistan Army.
“The prime minister congratulated General Aamer Raza, HI(M), SBt on his promotion and appointment wishing him the best for undertaking this important responsibility,” read the statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC) post was created after the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy (Amendment) Bills, 2025, were passed, replacing the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee post. The same legislation had made Field Marshal Asim Munir the Chief of Defense Forces.
Under the law, the prime minister may appoint the commander from among serving Pakistan Army generals for a three-year term, based on the recommendation of the Chief of the Army Staff-Chief of Defense Forces. It states that the appointment, reappointment or extension of the CNSC or the “exercise of discretion by the appointing authority in this regard, shall not be called into question before any court on any ground whatsoever.”
