Finance Minister Reviews CCP’s Operational Efficiency, Institutional Effectiveness

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the performance of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), focusing on measures to enhance its operational efficiency and institutional effectiveness in fulfilling its regulatory mandate.

During the meeting, Aurangzeb comprehensively reviewed the CCP’s departmental progress and discussed strategic initiatives to strengthen its enforcement framework. Each member of the CCP briefed the minister on the performance of their respective departments, with Aurangzeb reaffirming the government’s commitment to enabling CCP in augmenting its institutional ability and capabilities.

CCP Chairman Kabir Ahmed Sidhu briefed Aurangzeb on the Commission’s proactive enforcement efforts in identifying and addressing anti-competitive practices, including cartelization and trade abuse. He also updated the minister on ongoing litigation, recoveries and adjudication matters. Since his appointment, he noted, almost 79 cases have successfully concluded while others remain under active proceedings.

The discussions also reviewed the appointment of the Competition Appellate Tribunal, emphasizing its crucial role in accelerating the resolution of competition-related cases and enhancing the enforcement of Competition Law. The finance minister had previously facilitated the appointment of the chairman and two members of the tribunal and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the CCP in this regard.

The meeting was a continuation of previous discussions aimed at reinforcing CCP’s mandate and expediting enforcement actions to ensure a competitive and transparent market environment.

Apart from the finance minister and CCP chairman, CCP members Saeed Ahmad Nawaz, Bushra Naz Malik, Salman Amin, and Abdul Rashid Sheikh were also in attendance.
