China Committed to Supporting Pakistan’s Counter-Terror Efforts

China on Monday reiterated its commitment to supporting Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts and socio-economic development, stressing attempts to undermine mutual trust will fail.

“China will continue to support Pakistan in fighting terrorism,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a regular press briefing in Beijing while responding to questions about China’s concerns over militancy targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan. He added that Beijing was committed to assisting Pakistan in countering threats that risk destabilizing the region.

In recent weeks, multiple attacks targeting Chinese nationals on Pakistani soil have dampened ties between the “iron brothers,” with China demanding Islamabad ensure the safety of its citizens to avail the full benefits of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Stressing that China was dedicated to protecting citizens working abroad, Lin said the government was also firm in its stance on protecting the security of Chinese projects, and institutions overseas. He indicated the terror attacks specifically targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan might seek to strain the bilateral relationship between the two countries, and undermine trust and progress within the CPEC framework.

“China and Pakistan have the resolve and capability to foil any attempt to harm China-Pakistan relations and ensure that terrorists will pay the price,” he vowed, adding the relationship “has taken deep roots among our peoples.” He warned that any attempts to undermine “mutual trust and cooperation” would not succeed.

Lin further said China was committed to supporting Pakistan’s socio-economic development and improving the lives of its people. He reinforced Beijing’s dedication to CPEC and its economic partnership with Pakistan despite security challenges.
