The federal government on Sunday approved the Wheat Policy 2025-26, setting the official procurement price at Rs. 3,500/40kg following consultations with all provinces.
Chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the meeting included the participation of the chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan. An individual appointed by the chief minister represented Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, while the prime minister of Azad Kashmir and other relevant stakeholders also attended the meeting.
The meeting’s participants were informed that the new policy is aligned with international wheat import prices and aims to provide farmers a fair price for the government’s procurement of strategic reserves to ensure stable stocks. Under the new policy, there would be no restrictions on the inter-provincial movement of wheat, ensuring its availability nationwide. The federal minister for national food security has been tasked with chairing a national committee—comprising representatives of all provinces—that would supervise the implementation and coordination of policy measures. It would convene weekly and report directly to the prime minister.
According to the new policy, the federal and provincial governments would procure strategic reserves of about 6.2 million tons from the 2025-26 wheat crop.
During the meeting, the prime minister said the federal government had consulted all stakeholders, including the provincial governments, farmers’ bodies, industrialists and growers prior to devising the policy. “Based on the consultation, the government is announcing the National Wheat Policy 2025-26. The policy aims to ensure farmers’ profits while protecting public interests,” he said, emphasizing that wheat was not only a staple food, but also the biggest source of income for the country’s farmers.
