Bushra Shifted Back to Adiala after Eye Surgery

Incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra, has been transferred back to Adiala Jail after undergoing eye surgery at hospital in Rawalpindi, jail authorities said on Friday.

In a press release, jail authorities said she had complained of impaired vision in her right eye and was subsequently examined by ophthalmologists. It said the medical professionals had diagnosed retinal detachment in Bushra’s right eye and advised corrective surgery.

Bushra was then shifted to a private hospital in Rawalpindi on Thursday night, continued the statement. It said doctors had operated on her after conducting necessary tests and medical examinations, adding her consent was secured prior to any procedure.

“The patient was discharged after the surgery and one night’s hospital stay,” read the statement, adding she was then taken back to Adiala Jail. “Post-operative examinations and follow-up will be done as per the doctors’ advice,” it said.

Bushra is currently serving a seven-year sentence after her conviction in the £190 million corruption case. Reports of her ill health started circulating last month, with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) expressing concern and demanding she be taken to a hospital for diagnosis and treatment.

In a post on X on Friday morning, PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan said he was informed of Bushra’s transfer to hospital. “I was informed a message that Bushra had been shifted to the hospital last night and that I would be briefed about the treatment,” he wrote, adding he would request authorities to allow her family to meet her. He said he would also reiterate a request for Imran Khan’s family to meet him, as well as his shifting to hospital for treatment of his eye ailment.

“The earlier, the better. It is their basic right according to law,” he wrote. “Their health is too serious and every Pakistani is deeply concerned,” he added.

Bushra’s sister Maryam Riaz Wattoo subsequently said the incarcerated former first lady’s daughters had reached Islamabad and would visit her at Adiala Jail.
