ATC Grants Bail to Imran Khan’s Nephew Shahrez in May 9 Riots Case

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Wednesday granted post-arrest bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s nephew Shahrez in a case related to his alleged involvement in the May 9, 2023, riots.

The ATC announced the verdict on a bail petition filed by Shahrez—arrested on Aug. 21—after reserving it earlier in the day. During the hearing, Shahrez’s counsel argued that his client was alleged to have incited PTI workers during an attack on the Lahore Corps Commanders’ House, adding the prosecution failed to produce any evidence to support these claims.

The public prosecutor, in turn, told the court that the suspect’s affidavit had not been verified. However, the court accepted the defense counsel’s arguments and granted bail.

The May 9 riots broke out across the country following the arrest of the PTI founder in a corruption case in 2023. The violence included attacks on military and state installations, with the assault on the Corps Commanders’ House one of the most high-profile cases.

Aleema Khan’s other son, Shershah, remains in judicial remand. He is facing allegations of arson, vandalism, and torching a police van.
