AIIB Willing to Invest $100-150m in Pakistan’s Energy Sector

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on Tuesday indicated its willingness to invest between $100-150 million in Pakistan’s energy sector pipeline, focusing on transmission infrastructure, renewable energy and sustainable projects.

A delegation of the AIIB, led by Chief Investment Officer Konstantin Limitovskiy met Federal Energy Minister Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari in Islamabad, discussing investment opportunities in Pakistan’s power sector, including the transmission network, renewable energy development and digital modernization of the electricity system.

According to a statement issued by the Energy Ministry, Leghari said Pakistan’s north-south transmission infrastructure offered significant investment opportunities, adding the government was rapidly advancing reforms aimed at digitizing the power sector and improving efficiency.

He further said Pakistan was moving ahead with a phased plan to install around 10 million Advanced Metering Infrastructure meters nationwide, of which nearly 1.5 million meters had already been deployed in the initial phase. He said battery energy storage systems and expansion of transmission lines remained among the government’s top priorities as Pakistan seeks to modernize its electricity network and integrate a larger share of renewable energy into the national grid.

Limitovskiy said the AIIB was keenly interested in expanding investments in Pakistan’s energy sector and was evaluating financing options for renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and transmission-related projects. He said the bank’s technical teams would work with Pakistani institutions to advance cooperation on commercially viable projects.

Both sides also reviewed ways to enhance broader cooperation between Pakistan and the AIIB in the energy sector, the statement added.
