5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Punjab, KP, Islamabad

Several parts of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad were jolted by tremors on Tuesday after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake originating from south Punjab struck the country.

According to GFZ, Germany’s national research center, the earthquake struck at 12:28 p.m. at a depth of 10km and originated in Karor Lal Eason, a city near Dera Ghazi Khan.

The U.S. Geological Survey, meanwhile, reported the quake’s intensity at 5.4 on the Richter scale, adding it was at a depth of 10km and occurred 31km west of Karor. While the quake was mostly felt in Pakistan, reports from India on social media indicated tremors were also felt in its capital New Delhi and surrounding cities.

The quake panicked citizens, with many in the affected cities rushing out of their homes and offices and praying for the safety of their loved ones. However, no injuries, casualties or damages were reported in the immediate aftermath, with experts crediting the short duration of the quake.
