28th Amendment Coming Soon: Sanaullah

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Monday claimed the government will soon introduce a 28th Constitutional Amendment, adding he expected it to face few issues in securing approval from Parliament.

Speaking to journalists in Chiniot, he said the proposed amendment would relate to local bodies, the National Finance Commission and health matters. Discussions on all three subjects, he said, were already underway and the amendment would be introduced once consensus was achieved.

Just last week, the government introduced and passed the 27th Amendment through both houses of Parliament. Primarily targeting the judiciary and the armed forces, the legislation has drawn backlash over concerns it hampers judicial independence. Thus far, three judges—two of the Supreme Court and one of the Lahore High Court—have tendered resignations over the new law.

According to Sanaullah, the judges’ resignations are akin to political protests. He said Parliament has the constitutional right to pass amendments, while judges have taken an oath to uphold and protect those decisions. “Those who stepped down did so due to their personal motives,” he added.
